There are two main schemes designed to help you manage childcare costs in the UK: funded childcare hours and Tax-Free Childcare.
In England, working parents can access up to 30 hours of funded childcare starting from when their child is just 9 months old, a benefit that can save families up to £8,000 a year. When combined with the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, these initiatives can slash your monthly expenses by hundreds of pounds.
However, getting there isn't always simple. There are strict eligibility criteria to navigate, crucial application deadlines to meet, and varying rules depending on whether you live in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
What We’ll Cover in This 1-Hour Masterclass:
Who qualifies for funded hours and Tax-Free Childcare in the UK.
What adjusted net income means and how to calculate it.
How and when to apply for both schemes to avoid missing deadlines.
What happens to your childcare benefits during maternity leave or redundancy.
How Universal Credit interacts with funded hours.
The logistics of hiring a nanny and transitioning your child into care.
How to use the Workplace Nursery Benefit to slash your fees by 40%.
⚠️Is this session right for you? Please note that this masterclass is tailored for those earning under £100k due to specific scheme caps. If your income is £100k+, this particular session won't be suitable—but we’ve got you covered! You might find our previous session with wealth manager & financial coach Philly Ponniah much more relevant.
Date: 27th May
Time: 7.30pm
Location: Zoom
Did you know 1 in 10 mums set up their own business after maternity leave? Having a baby tends to shift your perspective on what’s actually worth your time, and for many of us, the traditional 9–5 just doesn't fit the new reality.
But how do you actually make the jump and build a successful business that replaces your old income, sustainably?
We’ve teamed up with Alice Gregory, who used maternity leave as the opportunity to start building a business of her own. After deciding not to return to the traditional 9–5 route, she began creating multiple income streams through self-employment while navigating motherhood at the same time.
This session is a realistic look at the highs, the lows, and the 'how-to' of starting a business after a baby.
In a world full of 'passive income' fluff and MLM pitches, consider this the honest antidote. No rose-tinted glasses. Just reliable advice, recent experience, and the actual steps you need to take to make it work for you.
In this masterclass you will learn:
Preparing financially and mentally before maternity leave
The expectations vs reality of becoming a self employed mum
Navigating changing priorities after having a baby
The thought process behind not returning to a traditional 9–5
Starting self-employment work during maternity leave
The realities of balancing work around a baby
Early income experiences, finances and uncertainty
Managing the emotional highs and lows of self-employment
How a freelance business can evolve over time
The biggest challenges, lessons and highlights from the journey
Honest reflections on motherhood, work and flexibility
It’s an unfortunate truth that many women in the UK face discrimination during pregnancy and maternity leave.
Recent studies reveal a significant issue: as many as 74,000 women each year are estimated to lose their jobs due to pregnancy or maternity leave.
This makes it absolutely crucial to understand your rights, recognise discriminatory behaviour, and know what steps to take if it happens to you.
To help you navigate these challenges, we're hosting a masterclass with Clare Chappell, our resident Nugget employment lawyer and Laura (AKA Worn out Working Mum).
Clare has over 24 years of experience specialising in pregnancy and maternity discrimination, Clare will provide essential insights into the protections you have during parental leave.
Laura has gained a significant following for her raw and honest perspective, especially after sharing her personal journey of being made redundant shortly after returning to work following the birth of her baby. She is passionate about helping other women in the same predicament and uses her platform to support & advocate for working parents.
There will be a dedicated Q&A session at the end, and if you can't attend live, a recording will be sent out the following day.
The Legal Bit:
A breakdown of your rights from pregnancy through to your first six months back.
When is redundancy legal, and when is it a "sham"? We look at the specific criteria for being made redundant during or after leave.
What counts as pregnancy/maternity discrimination in 2026?
When to instruct a lawyer, an honest look at costs, and where to access free advice.
What happens to your access to tax free childcare/childcare funding and how a redundancy payout might affect your eligibility
Navigating redundancy in reality:
Why your gut is your best early warning system.
Identifying the subtle signs of being sidelined
How to document everything and communicate with HR when you feel targeted (without losing your cool)
Navigating the "emotional fallout" of being made redundant.
How to pivot, rebuild your professional identity, and regain your voice after a "huge knock."
Please be aware that this masterclass is provided for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended to be, and should not be taken as, legal advice. For specific legal guidance, please consult with a qualified legal professional.
In many of our recent one-on-one calls, a common theme emerged: maternity leave often brings a significant shift in identity and priorities. For some, this change can make their current career feel like less of a fit, sparking a desire to explore a new path entirely.
To help navigate this transition, we’ve partnered with Evie Squires, founder of Mother of All Jobs. Inspired by her own return-to-work journey, Evie created a platform to help parents find flexible and fulfilling careers while supporting organizations in hiring more inclusively. As a mum of two, she’s passionate about showing that parenthood can uplift a career rather than hold it back.
Join us for this masterclass on the post-baby career change, where Evie will cover:

How do you balance a career and a baby?
The magic word is: ✨Boundaries✨
When we start to think about our personal boundaries (be it time, money, values, behaviour, or energy), it can feel hard.
We are the result of a lifetime of influence from those around us: family, friends, culture and expectations.
For many of us, we are told that centring our own needs, desires and wants is not the done thing.
That leading by what is important to us makes us selfish, entitled and unrealistic.
From today, let's make a change.
This is the one for you. You want to establish boundaries in your career and life, but you're unsure where to begin.
You are overstretched
Tired.
You've lost your spark for the things you enjoy!

This session will cover all the benefits you can claim during pregnancy, during your maternity leave and returning to work.
We will run through eligibility criteria for each one, answering common FAQs.
All content is updated to be appropriate for 2025 budget changes, and we will be covering the new provision for babies in neonatal, which is the neonatal care leave and pay act. Lots of time for your questions at the end too.
Negotiation: an underrated way to make parenting more affordable. This often-overlooked strategy can boost your income during maternity leave, help you qualify for government childcare support by staying under certain thresholds, and improve your long-term financial outlook.
We’ve teamed up with financial coach and ex-wealth manager Philly Ponniah to deliver the ultimate session on how to negotiate with your employer. Learn a tried and tested framework on how to negotiate, full of tips to improve your confidence while negotiating. Nugget will be running you through how to negotiate your parental leave package at work, utilising data from the Nuggbase (the UK’s biggest database of parental leave policies). We will also outline your rights to pay rises and promotions whilst on maternity leave, so you don’t miss out on any opportunities that are rightfully yours.
The money reality of going on your maternity leave can be daunting. For most people it involves a heavy reduction in household income, with 26% of women falling into debt over this period. How do you navigate this, whilst enjoying the time with your newborn baby?
We’ve teamed up with Clare Seal - money expert who has been through this all before (three times!). Nugget will share their tips on how to create an effective baby budget, discuss ‘uncomfortable’ money truths with your partner and ensure you are claiming every government benefit you are entitled to, to boost your income over this time. Clare will look at how you practically manage your money with less of it going around, how to avoid common overspending traps & share a few ideas on how you can earn & save during your mat leave.

Tiny ways to earn and save money on mat leave 👩🏽💻
There are two main schemes to help you with the cost of childcare in England.
In September you will be able to access 30 hrs of funded childcare from 9 months in England for working parents, which is expected to give families a saving of up to £7,500 a year.
This, combined with the tax free childcare scheme, can reduce your childcare costs by hundreds of pounds per month.
However! There are lots of eligibility requirements to get your head around and crucial timings to work out.
This hour long masterclass will answer all your key questions about how the schemes work and how to access the hours.
We will provide 30 minutes of content with 30 minutes dedicated to answering your questions so we can get through as many as possible.
Please note, this masterclass will not be appropriate for those earning 100K+. You might be interested in this session that we ran with wealth manager & financial coach Philly Ponniah instead.
Shared parental leave can be an amazing experience for parents and pave the way for equal parenting in the future.
However - it’s notoriously difficult to understand and employers often aren’t much help with organising the leave.
You often have to deal with two employers and two separate parental leave policies.
How do they interact with each other?
How do you make sure you’re following all the rules (there are so many 😅)?
And crucially - how do you set it up so it makes financial sense for your family?
We’ve teamed up with Tom Stenner-Evans - employment lawyer and father who was the first person to take shared parental leave at his law firm.
We’ll be walking you through how it all actually, practically works & share Tom’s experience of taking the leave. This is a session to bring your partners to!
What you will learn:
Eligibility for shared parental leave
How does it work and can your employers refuse?
Which person's HR needs to sort this out?
Can both parents be off at the same time?
What's the best way to maximise pay on shared parental leave?
What are SPLIT days and can you use annual leave on SPL?
What legal protections do you have if you take SPL?
What are your legal rights when you return to work?
Why should men in particular take advantage of SPL?
In this session, we are honing in on the finances for high earners once you are returning to work.
If you or your partner earn over 100k you lose access to government childcare schemes. With 30 funded hours coming into play this September in England, losing out on this childcare help will become more painful than ever.
What are the rules around net adjusted income?
How much should you sacrifice into your pension before it stops becoming worth it?
Should you reject your pay rise or go part-time?
Are workplace nursery schemes a silver bullet for high earners?
How do you weigh up your options?
We’ve teamed up with Philly Ponniah, Chartered Wealth Manager and financial coach to deliver a session tailored to these concerns. We will also be looking at estate planning once you’ve had a baby, and how to set your child up for financial success.
Suitable for those earning between £80,000 - £140,000 individually
Funded childcare spoken about refers to England. You can use the same principles to become eligible for tax-free childcare, which is UK wide.
What you will learn:
What childcare schemes are available
What to look out for when you earn around 100k re-funded hours and tax-free childcare
How do you work out whether reducing your salary for childcare schemes is worth it?
Should you go part time to access childcare benefits?
Flexible working requests
How do you build wealth for your children?

"I don't think we can afford another baby."
If that thought has crossed your mind, you're not alone. 90% of the Nugget community told us the same thing: money is the main reason they're hesitating on baby number two.
And it makes sense. You've likely just found your feet after a stretch of low income on maternity leave, childcare costs are already stretching things, and now you're weighing up doing it all again… maybe alongside a house move, remortgaging, or costs you didn't have first time round.
But "can we afford it" is rarely a yes-or-no question. It's a "how" question, and most people just haven't sat down and worked out the how yet.
Having a child is time-limited. Not knowing the numbers shouldn't be what decides it for you.
So, how do you actually afford baby number two? Join 165+ parents who've already done this masterclass!
We will be looking at:
👉What maternity pay will you get a second time around?
👉How to manage childcare costs on maternity leave
👉 What you need to think about before going on your second maternity leave if you need a bigger house / to remortgage
